El Chacharero is set to make its local debut in the city where it was filmed, Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, as part of a special short film screening presented by La Secretaria de Cultura de Chihuahua (State Government of Chihuahua) and El Paso Film Festival, through Cineteca Juárez at Centro Cultural Paso del Norte this Friday, April 17th, 2026. The program will feature 10 short films centered on or connected to the border community of Juarez. The award-winning film El Chacharero will open the program, followed by four additional films in the evening’s main lineup.
El Chacharero is the third installment from a trilogy of documentary films that showcase the most shocking lives from the border community of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico and El Paso, Texas. El Chacharero, tells the story of Edras, a man that survives by picking up trash in downtown Juarez, directed by Krisstian de Lara, produced by Uriel Venegas and music from Floating Isle and Remy Bourgeois.
To date, El Chacharero has won both Best Documentary and Audience Choice awards at Melrose Film Festival in Orlando, Florida. It has also earned Official Selections at the El Paso Film Festival, Plaza Classic Film Festival, and has been featured by various media outlets, including Univision, NBC, XHIJ Canal 44, KFOX, and El Diario de Juárez.
In an interview with Kn2s Productions, director Krisstian de Lara reflected on discovering the story, explaining that, much like the previous two installments, it presented an unsettling thread connecting all three, “We found a very revelatory story that reflects the economic and social struggle of the city and shocks you once again due to the reality and nature of the subject. I am grateful to have found El Chacharero and be able to tell his story through this platform and hopefully have audiences see the raw truth of what families like his are going through.”
Uriel reminisced when asked about his thoughts when producing this film in a separate interview for Kn2s Productions, “I believe each person’s life story is worth telling and if a life is as shocking as Edras’, even more so. […] Nowadays, I see someone picking up trash and wonder, ‘What kind of story lies behind?'”
The State Government of Chihuahua supports the borderland’s cultural landscape through Cineteca Juárez, a venue recognized for its free screenings of local, regional, and international films. It also functions as an alternative space for exhibition, dialogue, and the appreciation of cinema.
El Chacharero will be screening at Cineteca Juárez, presented by La Secretaria de Cultura de Chihuahua and El Paso Film Festival:
